PC Tools Internet Security

Lesser known and more resource intensive than Norton but good protection against and removal of all kinds of malware.

Stand-Outs

  • Behavior Guard, built on ThreatFire, detects day-zero threats based on their behavior
  • Displays website threat and annoyance rating while browsing
  • The threat database stores optimized signatures that identify multiple malware variants and so use minimal system resources
  • Intuitive, patent-pending spider scanning scans in minutes

Benefits & Features

Protects Against

  • Spyware, Adware, Trojans, Viruses, Worms, Keyloggers, Rootkits, Identity Theft, Hijackers, Tracking Threats, Rogue Anti-Spyware, Unwanted Software, Phishing, Popups, Hackers and Bad Websites.

Preventative Measures

  • New: seamlessly incorporates Behavior Guard, behavioral-based identification of day-zero (never before seen) threats.
  • Firewall Stealth Mode and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI).

Recovery

  • New: when a computer is so infected that installation requires Windows 'safe mode' and malware hogs computer resources resulting in long scan and repair times, PC Tools can now force your computer to give the scan higher priority than the malware.

Filters

  • Email Guard enables popular POP, IMAP & SMTP email clients to discard spam (Bayesian & behavioral filtering plus training) and remove malware.
  • Customizable Friend List and Block List for email and IP addresses.
  • Blacklisted Countries.
  • Site Guard protects against malicious websites and phishing while browsing.
  • Internet Explorer can use Browser Defender to check downloads, display site threat ratings, check search results (Google, Yahoo) and identify excessive pop-ups, phishing and browser exploits.

Usability

  • Schedule times & intervals for scans and updates.
  • Prevent scans & updates when the computer is busy (working for you).

I had Avira Personal a couple of months ago. It was no good, so i installed AVG free. My computer started acting strange so I ran a full AVG scan which showed nothing. i removed AVG and installed PC Tools internet Security. It found a trojan, a hijacker and a back door which I let it remove. My computer works great again.

If You get PC Tools installed on a clean comp, You seems to be relatively safe and well protected, but as cleaning tool, I'm a bit less impressed.

Would be great to see suite checking compressed files for virus anytime(not only during the dowload or during a regular scan) scan single files especially before installation at the users disgression like many other suites scan for rootkits before the computer starts.

What am i supposed to do with the spam filter? Every e-mail I get is labeled "spam". Actually, I get very little actual spam so this is overkill. Am I missing something here? A spam filter is no use if it labeles all mail as spam nor is it helping if it doesn't at least put it in another folder and learn what is or isn't spam

Resource hog. Unimpressed. Uninstalled.
XP SP2; fast notebook; experienced user.
After trying PC Tools Internet Security once I uninstalled it. It takes 250+MB of RAM, over 70% of CPU.
Trial version showed "security threats" but wouldn't fix them — not much of a trial.
It doesn't play well with Firefox: 100% CPU. I tried to close Firefox and for 10 minutes the computer was useless while the two programs battled it out.
Closing PC Tools Internet Security takes over 30 seconds.
Don't these guys do usability testing?
